How the recession can impact your diet
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Are you a member of the 'There's a Hole in My Wallet' club?
And does the hole in your wallet seem to be getting bigger lately? Does shopping for groceries make your palms sweat due to a serious liquidity crunch?
Studies have shown that when money gets tight in the economy, a lot of us cut back on groceries and switch to buying cheaper prepared foods that stimulate our taste buds but are not necessarily good for us. According to most health officials, the economic slump has a devastating impact on the population's diet and health.
A lot of us may actually wind up packing on the pounds by eating so-called 'comfort foods' that are laden with sugar and saturated fats.
Practical tips to prevent wallet-busting
Offered below are a few tips to help you make better choices with a limited budget. So guys, tighten your belts!
Set a budget: Track all food purchases for a few weeks and identify areas where you can cut back.
Use leftovers: Frozen cuts of meat, bags of cut green beans or shelled peas, other essentials that you might have forgotten about -- you will find use for all of them.
Off-season foods are always more expensive: Do you really need to buy out-of-season fresh foods each week, or will frozen veggies do? In-season produce is hands down less expensive. Set a weekly or monthly spending limit.
Make a shopping list, and then stick to it: Keep a running list on the fridge and write down necessities as you think of them. Before you're off to the store, find out what's there in your pantry and fridge and add or remove items as needed.
Buy only what you'll use: Purchase foods that you use regularly. Remember, fruit and vegetables are still fairly cheap and also very filling, so dont miss out on them.
Do not experiment with new foods: If you happen to dislike a particular food or cuisine, this isn't the time to try it. It will likely end up in the trash.
Don't buy in bulk unnecessarily: Buying in bulk only helps if a food is a staple in your house, like whole wheat flour, eggs, biscuits, fruit or some staple vegetables like potatoes and onions.
Be realistic: If you don't eat too much of a particular food, don't buy a super-sized amount, as you probably will never get through the whole thing.
Know your good, bad and evil comfort foods: Cook more at home -- it's much cheaper. And cut down on buttery baked foods like pastries, pies, puffs, cakes as well as other packaged foods like wafers, cookies, mixtures and fried variants. They're expensive, unnecessary and will make you gain weight. What's wrong with soul-satisfying soups, grilled home-made panini sandwiches, chicken frankies or rolls and savoury veggie omelettes instead? These are just a few substitutes that are not only healthy, but provide you with loads of nutrition.
Now for a little savings game:
Dinner for two at a restaurant involves:
Waiting time of 30 minutes
Cost:
1 portion of salad: Rs 50
4 rotis: Rs 100
1 portion gobi mattar: Rs 90
1 portion dal makhani: Rs 120
2 portions of dessert: Rs 240
Total bill: Rs 600
Dinner for two at home involves:
A few minutes' planning time (this can be done while you're commuting to or from work)
Preparation time of 30 minutes
Cost:
1 portion of salad: Rs 20
4 rotis: Rs 10
1 portion gobi mattar: Rs 25
1 portion dal tadka: Rs 50
2 portions of dessert (sliced fresh fruit): Rs 50
Total bill: Rs 155
Which is the healthier option, in terms of diet and cost? Think about it! Food prepared at home is less expensive, more nutritious and can feed more people.
So put on your recession cap and ensure:
That you balance your budget scale and your meals -- never, never overeat.
That you're smart and turn this into an opportunity to save some money and work your way to a healthier you.
Seal that hole in your wallet, make the moolah go farther and feel good about yourself, knowing you are a step ahead of the game!

NEW AGE CAREER OPTIONS IN FINANCE
Sunday, March 22, 2009
Puja Tandon highlights lucrative career paths in the exciting world of Finance.
The brave new corporate, is an exciting place to be in right now. If there is a right time and right place – this is
it. Many indicators are moving north! But as always, it will make things better if we are prepared and if we
know what to expect. In today’s fast paced world planning a career is a great challenge. The tremendous
growth in the economy is opening up new opportunities as new businesses get set up. India has become a global
hunting ground for talent. Now we have the opportunity to think of “global” careers. A career as a finance
professional today is vastly different than it used to be years ago. The study and analysis of today’s markets,
financial products and other financially related sectors of the business world are the foundation of financial
activities to date. Stockbroker, financial planner, and investment banker are just a few examples of jobs that
may be chosen when pursuing a career in finance. As finance grows year to year, being accurate and up to date
with financial information and financial techniques is essential when considering a career in finance.
New trends in Financial Markets:
Financial markets across the world are getting integrated and complex due to technological advancements of
most of the erstwhile closed economies. This process warranted the market professionals to be equipped with
the knowledge of the various market processes, and the understanding of broader role of various segments of
the markets. Over the past few years the financial market has seen a tremendous change in the activities that
are transacted in it. Reliance , Infosys, Wipro, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI, Satyam are few amongst the
many companies who have tapped offshore markets to raise capital. The journey of IDR has just begun. The
conditions set for the issue are stiffer; yet taking into confidence the realities of market conditions is a step
for the convergence and harmonisation of whole stock markets. The introduction of derivatives has brought in
a number of challenges. These assets are like dynamite. Used properly, they can be extremely effective and
beneficial. The problem is they can also destroy careless users. There are several problems faced by
derivatives markets across the globe. Even today, majority of the investing public do not share the advantages
of these products due to the enormous margin requirements. The Indian stock market is on the roll. Today
India is one of the favourite investment destinations of FII’s. Restructuring and consolidation have become a
norm rather than an exception. Internet has touched almost all aspects of our lives. In their quest to
differentiate their services and gain competitive advantage over their competitors, the financial service
providers are trying to provide their services to the customers in the comfort of their homes. The internet has
emerged as a convenient channel for these service providers. Internet-Based trading technologies together
with shifts in the economy and the business environment are transforming treasury investing. Online trading
platforms are making significant inroads into cash management functions; treasurers are increasingly relying
on these tools to find and execute the best trades. Banking sector is also witnessing changes. Banks are eyeing
retail segment as it offers immense opportunities. However, on the governance front, the sector is facing
multiple challenges like: increased competition, rising customer expectations, and diminishing customer
loyalty. Corporate governance is in fact the crying need of the day as Indian banks endeavor to make global
players. Mutual funds are also competing with commercial banks in the race for retail investor’s savings and
corporate float money. The power shift towards mutual funds has become obvious. The coming years will show
that the traditional saving avenues are losing out in the current scenario. Many investors are realising that
investments in savings accounts are as good as locking up their deposits in a closet. The opportunities in
finance are many with a wide choice of organisations and jobs to choose from. Prof. Vijay Page, Director
General - MET Institute of Management says “The financial sector is now poised for a quantum leap and the
challenges are so vast that they will fulfill the aspirations of the innovators, the workaholics as well as the
researchers from all streams of society. Those who join the finance sector in the take off stage will dominate
business and trade worldwide for decades to come.”
Careers and Job Information
“Finance is the key when you think about strategy, because what are we all about? It’s about creating
shareholder value.” You can grow a company volumetrically as much as you want and you may not create any
value at all. So underpinning all of those strategic decisions to sell properties or to make acquisitions – is the
financial analysis says Janet F. Clark, CFO Marathon Oil Corp.
Today's finance professionals assume a broad range of responsibilities involving capital budgeting, risk
management, project analysis and evaluation, and short-term and long-term financial planning. Finance
professionals are key to the strategic management and success of the business enterprise. They are often
responsible for making investment decisions and determining financial policy for their organisations.
The finance career field includes:

especially in business administration, economics, or risk management—is increasingly important. Employers
value the analytical skills and the training in the latest financial methods and technology that these degrees

INVESTMENT BANKING
Investment Banks help companies and governments issue securities, help investors purchase securities,

Most foreign banks and financial institutions prefer management graduates from the premiere management

economists with postgraduate qualifications in finance, economics, financial planning, capital markets and so
on. A Ph. D in Economics and relevant experience in the industry can also get you a good job.
COMMERCIAL BANKING
Commercial banks serve large corporations, small businesses, as well as the general public. Despite recent
consolidation in commercial banking, the industry continues to provide more career opportunities in finance
than any other sector in the financial services industry.
Job Options
The opportunities at commercial banks are more numerous today than they have ever been. With entry level

FINANCIAL PLANNING
Financial planning helps people make advance provision for financial needs that may arise in future .You can
draw parallels between the family doctor and a financial planner. The family doctor takes care of your
physical health and the financial planner takes care of your financial health, ensuring orderly and systematic
achievement of your financial goals
On the technical side, strong attention to detail is required as you analyse all types of financial options,
including their tax implications and legal restrictions. Financial computing skills are recommended for
performing the mathematical calculations quickly and accurately. You must also have the ability to
communicate somewhat complex financial concepts and strategies to clients in non-technical, easy-tounderstand
terms.
The Chartered Financial Planner (CFP) course is presently offered in India by two authorised education
providers of the Association of Financial Planners (AFP) in technical collaboration with the Financial Planning
Association of Australia Ltd. (FPA). The 2-year distance-learning programme covers topics such as insurance
planning and risk management, retirement planning, tax and estate planning, employee benefits, wealth
creation, budgeting, cash flow management, debt management and financial plan construction. Alternatively,
an MBA/CFA/CA/Insurance specialisation - singly or in combination, would also give you a broad understanding
of the various investment instruments and options, and their implications.
STOCK BROKING
Brokers or stock market professionals are now either playing host to foreign investment bankers, who are
looking for opportunities on the Indian stock market, or visiting fund managers abroad seeking investment
here. Stock market houses are redefining themselves and the business of stock broking is highly visible today.
Communication links between the dealing room and the trading ring are being improved.
The National Stock Exchange or NSE (inaugurated on 23 July 1994) provides nationwide facilities with access to
investors all over the country. The automated, screen-based trading system using state-of-the-art technology
makes market operations transparent. Stock broking business requires the services of specialists (in varied
fields) - economists, accountants, finance managers, financial analysts, capital market specialists, and
investments and financial planners.
1. Postgraduate courses in economics and commerce are available in most universities in the country.
2. Finance managers may be MBAs with specialisation in finance from the reputed institutes of
management or from the departments of business administration of the major universities.
3. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), New Delhi, conducts the chartered accountancy
course for the plus two level through the foundation course and directly for graduates.
COMMODITY TRADING
Commodities Trading is a global phenomenon and offers tremendous potential to market participants for both
profit taking on small price corrections as well as to hedgers looking at managing price risk on account of price
fluctuations. In developed markets, futures trading is conservatively 10 times the size of cash market in
commodities. If we consider the fact that in the US, where the futures trading is almost 20 times that of the
cash market production, it would only be fair to suggest that our futures market would be a very large and
deep market, easily many times more than that of the securities market.
MCX CERTIFIED Commodity Professional (MCCP):The Exchange offers this certification course for
professionals who want to pursue a career in Commodity derivatives markets. It is designed with necessary
information and inputs so as to enable the participants to get well versed with the modalities of the
commodity markets in India. Certification as "MCX Certified Commodity Professional" is given on passing.
INSURANCE
Apart from career opportunities available with insurance companies employment avenues are also open in
corporate sector, stock broking firms, finance companies, shipping companies etc. With private participation in
insurance sector the number of employment opportunities have gone up.
Actuarial: An actuary holds one of the most important position in an insurance business. He is involved in
solving wide range of financial problems related with insurance investments, financial planning and
management. Graduates in maths or satistics are suited for this kind of a job because the work is based on
mathematical and statistical skills. In the coming times it will definitely make one of the highly paid career
option in the insurance sector.
Underwriting: The life and non-life insurance segments require professional underwriters. Underwriters assess
the risk in the business and takes care of risk management.
Investment: Like banks and mutual funds, investment professionals will be required in insurance sector as
well. Professionals with degree in finance from reputed institutes as well as experienced professionals from
banks and mutual funds will have promising career options to look forward. MET Asian Management
Development Centre offers a Post Graduate in e Management and Business Administration (PGeMBA) in
Insurance Management.
REAL ESTATE
Real estate is collateral for mortgages and a large amount of financial assets. Identifiable real estate fields are
mortgage banking, property management, real estate appraisals, brokerage and leasing, and real estate
development.
The old stereotype that financial officers do nothing but crunch numbers all day is fading quickly. Thanks to
computers who do the number crunching, finance officers now spend their time assessing reports generated by
computers. The CEO of Coca-Cola said: “The secret isn’t counting beans, it’s growing more beans ” Thus the
need has increased for intelligent, dynamic communicators and analysers in all aspects of the financial world.

What is an Option?
Sunday, December 14, 2008
Option is a contract which gives buyer the right , but not the obligation to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specific price on or before a certain date. An option has an Expiry date , when its automatically exercised if it has any intrinsic value left . When you buy an option you have to pay some premium at the time of buying it.
You can buy or sell Options just like you buy or sell Shares. They are traded in real time. An option value depends on some underling, which can be a stock or an index or even interest rate, The scope of this article is restricted to Stock options or index options. An example of index option is Nifty option , so its underlying is Nifty.
You must know that its a kind of Derivative : Derivatives are any instrument whose value are derived from some other thing, there value depends on some other thing , like In case of options in stock market , there value depend on either a stock or an index. Futures are also a kind of Derivatives, The minimum money required for trade in Futures are much more than Options. You can trade in options with as little as 2,000 or 3,000 (depending on the option you are trading in).
Types of option: CALL and PUT
CALL option gives you the right to BUY something anytime before expiry at a predetermined price. The value of the CALL option increases as the Price of the underlying thing increases. The reason for this is because you can still buy it at the fixed price and the difference is your profit.
PUT option gives you the right to SELL something anytime before expiry at a predetermined price. The value of PUT option increases as the price of the underlying Decreases. The reason is that you still have the right to SELL it at fixed price and difference will be your profit.
SOME OPTION TERMS
Exercising an Option : To exercise an Option means to Buy(CALL) or Sell(PUT) the stock on the expiry date if they are European style else Buy or sell anytime on or before Expiry if they are American Style.
Expiry Date : The date on which an option will expire and then it will be exercised automatically if it has any intrinsic value left.
Option Style : Options are of two styles , American style (It can be exercised any time before or on expiry date) and European Style (exercised on expiry only).
STRIKE Price : Strike rate is Stated Price for which the underlying stock can be purchased or sold on expiry date.
SPOT Price : The current price of the underlying at a particular time.
LOT : Options are traded in lot size , you can buy 1 lot , 2 lot or any number of lots , and a lot has a particular number of shares in a single lot , Like Nifty options have lot size of 50.
Premium : Every option has some premium which users have to pay when they purchase an Option . So for a CALL option, the premium increases when its underlying price increase and decreases when its underlying price decreased and just opposite of PUT option.
How does an OPTION look like?
Example : CHAFER 90 CE 1.95 , EXPIRY 26th June
CHAFER is the symbol for a stock called CHAMBAL FERTILIZERS , so its a Stock option. The expiry date of this option is 26th June (current year). 90 CE means its a CALL (C) option ,which is European Style (E , can be exercised on expiry date only) and the Strike rate is 90 , means that you have right to buy 1 lot (3450 shares , it depends on the option how many shares a lot has) of chambal fertilizers shares at Rs 90 on the date of expiry if you want.
What are the Profit and Losses you can make?
The Losses are always limited to the extent of premium you pay (in worst case you do not exercise the option and you let your premium go) , On the other hand the profits are theoretically unlimited , because the option price can keeps increasing when underlying increases or decreases depending on the type of option.
What is time value and option value ?
The Premium you pay for the option has two components
- Time Value
- Intrinsic value
Premium = Time value + Intrinsic Value
Intrinsic value is the true worth of the option (premium) and Time value is the value which is there because of the time left for the expiry , because as the Expiry time comes near the risk of loosing the money is high. So time value keeps decreasing as the expiry comes closer. There fore you will see that even if STRIKE price is closer to SPOT price , the option price will be very high if the expiry is after many days .
For CALL option price moves towards 0 if SPOT is less then STRIKE price and expiry comes closer .
For PUT option price moves towards 0 id SPOT is higher than STRIKE and expiry comes closer.
How does it works
You can either sell it at the profit or still hold it.
Case 2: If market does not fall as per your expectation and still is at 4400 before 10 days of expiry and the current price of premium is suppose 10 , you can sell it at loss , because you don't want it to become 0 . Suppose you didn't sell it and market really closed above 4300 on expiry date , then you loose whole your premium (as SPOT < style="font-weight: bold;">Options used for Hedging
Example 1:
Suppose you buy CHAFER 90 CE EXPIRY 26th June , at a premium of 1.95 (you will have to pay Rs 1.95 * 3450 to buy this option) , and the SPOT is 78 , means currently price of Chambal fertilizer share is Rs. 78 , now the price of option will follow the price of the share price. If price increases to say 85 , then the option may increase to 4.5 (depending on demand and supply) , and at this point you can sell the option and earn a profit of 4.5-1.95 = 2.55 Per share , profit of 130% . Now suppose on 26th June (Expiry day) , the price of Chambal Fertilizer is Rs 100 , then the option will be exercised and who ever has the option at that time will receive the profit of Rs 10 (total 10 * 3450) and the option will not be exercised if the SPOT (current price) of share is below 90 , because then he will make loss if exercised. (Remember , its not your obligation to exercises the option (you exercise if its in profit , or you loose your premium)
When do you buy Options
Example 1 :
Suppose Infosys is at 2000 today (1st June) and you are optimistic that its price will go further go up 10% or 15% (2200 or 2300) . so you buy a CALL option of Infosys which is going to Expire in approx 1 month , say INFOSYS 2200 CE 10.5 26th June is available and lot size is 1000 , so you pay 1000 * 10.5 = Rs 10,500 for this option.
Now option price will move the same way as the price of Infosys share. At the end of the Expiry date if Price of Infosys share will be more than the 2200 then the option will be called "In the Money" as it will be in profit when exercised Else it will be out of money. So suppose Price of Infosys share is 2280 at the end of Expiry then you exercise the option and get 1000 * 80 = Rs 80,000 , you can also sell the option anytime before Expiry date if you want to make profit and convinced that the option price has reached at a good point.
Example 2:
You think that Economy is not doing well and markets as whole will fall because of high inflation news and political issues (or for any reason) , Suppose Nifty is at 4600 and you believe that it will fall to 4300 in 2-3 months , Suppose current date is 1st June then you can buy NIFTY PE 4300 AUG , assume premium is Rs 15.
Case 1: If markets fall badly and reaches 4500 in 1 month and the premium increase to 330 . You can either sell it at the profit or still hold it.
Case 2: If market does not fall as per your expectation and still is at 4400 before 10 days of expiry and the current price of premium is suppose 10 , you can sell it at loss , because you don't want it to become 0 . Suppose you didn't sell it and market really closed above 4300 on expiry date , then you loose whole your premium (as SPOT < STRIKE)
Options used for Hedging
The main use of Options is for hedging , So if you have bought some 1000 shares of company ABC at Rs 20 , and think that price may fall to 15 in one month ,you can ABC PE 20 or 19 , and pay a small premium , Now you are covered for the loss you will make on shares , because you have right to sell the shares at 20 or 19 (depends on the price you bought the options at).
Some other important points
- Options are very risky and very rewarding , it can give returns of even 100% or 200% in day , or can give negative returns of 50% or 80% in a day.
- Options are very volatile , so its a good idea to be patient with options.
- Buying Options near its Expiry dates are highly risky , because if they go in wrong direction they don't have time to come back.
- Its not a good idea to buy a option with strike price very far from the SPOT price unless there is some good reason for it . Options with more gap between between STRIKE and SPOT have less premium , but very risky (and can be very rewarding too).
- Its not a good idea to put a Stop loss for your option very near to the current price , because its highly probable that it will come to Stop loss point and then again bounce back because of there high volatility.
- Its a good idea to set a target to book profits and get out , rather than trying to get maximum out of option . If you don't exit at a good point , the chances are that value will again bounce back to normal price and you will miss a chance. (I sold Chambal Fertilizer CALL 90 option when it price went up to 6.5 though 8-9 looked achievable target next day , but i thought its a great return and didn't miss the chance of booking 250% return in 2 days , Buy price was 1.95).

campus interview on the way................
Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Career Objectives : You could talk about your career objectives and how the two year MBA programme will help you achieve them. This implies that you have a clear idea of what your career objectives are and how you wish to achieve them. For example, you may want to be an entrepreneur and wish to set up your independent enterprise after doing your MBA and then working for a few years in a professionally managed company. You could explain to the panel that the MBA programme will provide you with the necessary inputs to help you run your business enterprise better. But then you must be clear about what the inputs you will receive in the MBA programme are.
Value Addition : That brings us to the second area that your answer should touch upon. What is the value you will add to yourself during your two year study of management. Value addition will essentially be in two forms knowledge and skills. Knowledge of the various areas of management e.g. marketing, finance, systems, HRD etc. and skills of analysis and communication. You will find it useful to talk to a few people who are either doing their MBA or have already done it. They will be able to give you a more detailed idea of what they gained from their MBA.
Background : Remember, there must be no inconsistency between your proposed study of management and your past subject of study or your past work experience. If you have studied commerce in college then management is a natural course of higher studies. If you are an engineer this is a tricky area. You must never say that by pursuing a career in management you will be wasting your engineering degree. Try and say that the MBA course and your engineering degree will help you do your job better in the company that you will join. But then you should be able to justify how your engineering qualification will help.
Opportunities and Rewards : You could also at this stage mention the opportunities that are opening up in organizations for management graduates. Highlight with examples. At the end you may mention that while monetary rewards are not everything they are also important and MBAs do get paid well. You must not mention these reasons as your primary motivators even if that may be the case.
What to Expect ?
In general, B-school interviews are not formulaic. The focus can range from specific questions about your job responsibilities to broad discussions of life. Approach the interview as a conversation to be enjoyed, not as a question-and-answer ordeal to get through. You may talk more about your hobbies or recent cross-country trip. This doesn't mean that it won't feel like a job interview. It just means you're being sized up as a person and future professional in all your dimensions. Try to be your witty, charming, natural self. Interviews are conducted by students, faculty, admissions personnel and alumni. Don't dismiss students as the lightweights; they follow a tight script and report back to the committee. However, because they're inexperienced beyond the script, their interviews are most likely to be duds. You may have to work harder to get your points across.
How to Prepare ?
Prepare for the interview in several ways: Expect to discuss many things about yourself. Be ready to go into greater depth than you did in your essays (but don't assume the interviewer has read them). Put together two or three points about yourself that you want the interviewer to remember you by. Go in with examples, or even a portfolio of your work, to showcase your achievements. Practice speaking about your accomplishments without a lot of "I did this, I did that." Finally, be prepared to give a strong and convincing answer to the interviewer's inevitable question: "Why here?"

Nuclear Deal
Wednesday, August 6, 2008
India will have uninterrupted supply of Nuclear Fuel for its US-made nuclear reactors. India and the US will agree to transfer nuclear material, non-nuclear material, equipment and components. US will support/help India in developing strategic reserves of nuclear fuel to guard against future disruption of nuclear supply using the its international 'Big Brother' role . In case of disruption, US and India will jointly convene a group of friendly supplier countries (NSG) to include nations like Russia, France and the UK to pursue such measures to restore fuel supply.
Side-effects of Npowerment
IT and software
These sectors will be the biggest beneficiaries as a relaxation in global technology rules gives India access to much more advanced tech, spelling a quantum leap for the Infosys, TCS and Wipros of the country. Indian companies now have to reinvent the wheel, so to speak, before they can jump to the next level. For instance, access to high-performance computing systems — a lot of which are currently denied to India under various export control regimes — will put Indian software and IT R&D in a different league.
HPC systems have contributed to leading-edge developments in such diverse applications as weapons design, integrated-circuit simulation, automobile crash simulation, seismic prospecting, and drug design.
Oil and electronics
This includes technology used in weather analysis and forecasting. As it also has nuclear applications, it has thus far been denied to India. Digital phosphor oscilloscopes, which are indispensable for oil refineries and electronics industry, also have a nuclear role and are currently barred — but will now be available. Filamentary poles, important for making tennis rackets, golf clubs and fishing poles, are also inaccessible because they can be used for uranium enrichment.
Mining and power
Compressors, testing systems, furnaces for power generation, mining equipment, high-voltage power supplies, industrial and scientific equipment like heat exchangers, pipings, fittings, valves, measuring and calibrating equipment... Many of these have applications in different sectors and access to them would give Indian manufacturing a huge boost.
Medicine and industry
There is also technology and scientific research that relates to civilian applications in medicine, radiology and industry. Communications switching equipment, certain types of electronic equipment, lower speed photography equipment, pressure-measuring instruments, and numerically controlled machine tools — much of all this is currently out of bounds for India's knowledge economy.
In the field of medicine, X-ray imagers that use cobalt-60 may soon become accessible. So will specialised equipment for oil and gas exploration. Nuclear well-logging is used by advanced countries to help predict the commercial viability of new and existing oil and gas wells, and it could become available in India as well.
Defence and space
India's choices could improve considerably once it gets a free hand to purchase previously restricted conventional weapons, most notably Israel's Arrow missile defence system, a partially US-funded programme.
India wants the Arrow to complete its triad of the Green Pine radar and Phalcon but has thus far been denied because the Arrow interceptor is a Category I missile capable of delivering a 500-kg payload to a range of 300 km. Also denied to India are ocean surveillance systems and satellite systems for electronic reconnaissance, navigation, military meteorology, and nuclear explosion detection. But the doors are slowly opening.
Components biz
According to Anupam Srivastava, technology and nuclear expert at the University of Georgia, US, when other countries want to build nuclear reactors in India, it will be Indian companies like L&T and BHEL that will get the contracts for the components. "Indian companies will become component providers and vendors to these projects. We are looking at India becoming a nuclear energy components provider in the next few years. India will become a supplier country, no longer merely a recipient country." The US, having accepted that the PSLV is a civilian rocket, will now make it easier to access hi-tech cooperation in civil space dual-use and advanced aerospace technology (including lasers), he says.
R P Singh says Indian companies or research entities would like to participate in global projects like Eureka in the EU for market-oriented R&D in robotics, environment technology, agriculture, bio-sciences etc, but a lot of those technologies are currently denied to India. When the denial veil is lifted in one sector it also has a ripple effect in other sectors.
The possibilities are immense in emerging scientific disciplines like nanotechnology and synthetic biology that draw upon many other branches of science, all of which are controlled technologies. The nuclear deal will not suddenly land all these technologies on India's doorstep, but what is important is that people will not turn away Indians automatically. The playing field will become a little less skewed against India.
LASTLY
It is strange, why is this government ignoring all negatives of the deal? Why are they looking more as brokers of USA? USA is giving us obsolete uranium technology ,which is unsuitable and unreliable for India. Thorium technology is much better for India with lesser side effects; moreover. India will not dependent on USA for fuel in future, There are two competing thorium designs. One that is a multi step process where thorium is bred to U233, which is then extracted and burned in a second reactor, its at least a decade off and India is perfecting it. Then there is a design that one that an American company has worked on for 13+ years and is to the point of commercialization, it would easily power the VVER-1000 reactors India is building on Indian thorium in very short order. The technology can’t be transferred in the absence of the 123 agreement. Thorium is safer to burn than Uranium on several fronts, its waste has an extremely short half-life, it melts at 500 degrees higher than uranium, it stays in the reactor for much longer between re-fueling resulting in much less waste by mass per unit output. Thorium is a great energy source, but India will have to wait until they have their own overly complicated system up and running.

India on alert after two days of bombings kill 46

NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) - India's major cities were put on high alert on Sunday, with fears of more attacks after at least 46 people were killed in two days of bombings that hit Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
At least 16 bombs exploded in the Indian city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state on Saturday, killing at least 45 people and wounding 161, a day after another set of blasts in Bangalore killed a woman.
Two more unexploded bombs were found in the city of Surat on Sunday, one of the world's biggest diamond-polishing centres, police said.
A little-known group called the "Indian Mujahideen" claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad attack on Saturday. The same group said it carried out bomb attacks that killed 63 people in Jaipur in May.
It is unusual for any group to claim responsibility, but India says it suspects militant groups from Pakistan and Bangladesh are behind a wave of bombings in recent years, with targets ranging from mosques and Hindu temples to trains.
"The entire nation, including major metro cities in India, have been put on high alert and they have been asked to step up security in vital installations," a home ministry spokesman said.
In New Delhi, police used loudspeakers and distributed leaflets in crowded market places, warning people to watch out for unclaimed baggage and suspicious objects. Police guarded Hindu temples in the eastern city of Kolkata.
There were two separate series of bombings in Ahmedadad, the first near busy market places. A second quick succession of bombs went off 20 to 25 minutes later around a hospital, where at least six people died, police said. All were detonated with timers.
"I came with my two children to cheer up my mother admitted to hospital," said Pankaj Patel, whose son Rohan and daughter Pratha were killed at Ahmedadad hospital. "They were laughing when the blast occurred. Now they are dead."
Two doctors were killed in the hospital in a blast in which at least one bomb was tied onto a gas cylinder. Charred motorcycles and bicycles were shown outside. TV showed victims writhing in pain and covered in blood on hospital floors.
The other bombs were in Ahmedabad's crowded old city dominated by its Muslim community. Many of the bombs were packed into metal tiffin boxes, used to carry food, and stuffed with ball-bearings. Some were left on bicycles.
Police found two unexploded bombs in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The state government ordered the closure of all shops, cinemas and markets on Sunday and told people to stay indoors.
Ahmedabad is the main city in the communally sensitive and relatively wealthy western state of Gujarat, scene of deadly riots in 2002 in which 2,500 people are thought to have died, most of them Muslims killed by rampaging Hindu mobs.
Ahmedabad and Bangalore are in states ruled by the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party and are among the country's fastest-growing.
Gujarat's Chief Minister Narendra Modi is one of India's most controversial politicians, accused of turning a blind eye to the Gujarat riots.
MUSLIM BACKLASH?
Some analysts say there is evidence of local Muslim groups, for years seen as unaffected by the rise of global Islamist militancy, of taking up violence against India, where they are a poor and often neglected minority. They might be getting training and financial backing from Pakistan or Bangladesh.
"Over the last few years, the dissatisfaction among Indian Muslims has hitched onto the wagon of the global/regional jihad," said C. Uday Bhaskar, a security analyst and former director of New Delhi's Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses.
"If you have 150 million Muslims in India, only 0.01 percent of that figure would mean a militant nucleus of 15,000 people."
Police raided one house in Mumbai where they believe e-mails from the Indian Mujahideen were linked, local media reported.
India's home ministry said on Friday it suspected "a small militant group" was behind the Bangalore blasts, while some police officials suspected the attack could be the work of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.
Some IT companies in Bangalore, known as India's Silicon Valley, were increasing security. Each bomb had a similar explosive force to one or two grenades.
The city is a prominent software development centre and is also home to a major outsourcing industry.
